Every year thousands of pilgrims participate in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which is considered one of the sacred pilgrimages in the world. The yatra holds great religious significance, especially for Hindus and Buddhists in Nepal. The yatra operating directly from Kathmandu is relatively convenient for the Nepali pilgrims due to its easy access to Tibet.

It simplifies the logistical aspects of the journey for Nepali pilgrims, ensuring a hassle-free experience. The pilgrims are provided with essential travel information, helping them with everything from border formalities to transportation and accommodation in Tibet. The difficulty of the journey is given extra attention, especially the challenges of high altitude, hence assisting the pilgrims with acclimatisation to ensure their safety.

Why Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for Nepali?

Given the higher number of Hindu and Buddhist followers in Nepal, the pilgrimage to this sacred region is, therefore, a journey of immense spiritual significance for Nepali devotees. For Hindus, Mount Kailash is the divine abode of Lord Shiva, the supreme deity of destruction and transformation. It is believed that circumambulating the mountain cleanses all sins and provides liberation (Moksha). For Buddhists, Kailash is known as Kang Rinpoche (Precious Snow Mountain) and is revered as the home of Demchok, a deity representing ultimate bliss.

Furthermore, Nepal also shares a deeper cultural and historical connection with Tibet, where the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are located. Having shared the geographical proximity with Tibet, which was one of the ancient trade routes, the Nepalese pilgrims find the yatra more accessible compared to pilgrims from other countries.

How to reach Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Generally, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra can be reached via three main routes: Kyirong, Simikot, and Lhasa.

Via Kyirong Border (Group)

The route via the Kyirong border is the most popular route for Nepali pilgrims. It is cheaper but definitely longer, totalling 11 days between Kathmandu and the border and driving into Kyirong before hitting the road through Saga to reach Mansarovar and Kailash Parikrama.

Via Simikot (Group)

It is also the fastest and easiest route, taking about 10 days from Kathmandu. Travellers fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then from Nepalgunj to Simikot, then take a helicopter ride from Simikot to Hilsa and cross into Tibet by road to reach Taklakot, Mansarovar, then Darchen.

Via Lhasa (Private)

Another travelling route to Kailash Mansarovar is via Lhasa, which takes a relatively longer time. The pilgrims can take a flight to Lhasa and then take a road trip towards the Kailash Mansarovar Region.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has a deep religious, cultural, and spiritual significance for Nepali pilgrims since it is a sacred journey to one of the holiest places in Hinduism and Buddhism. The journey is easier due to Nepal's proximity to Tibet, hence making it a pilgrimage long cherished by the devotees in their aspirations for divine blessings and spiritual enhancement.
